Workshop time commitment will depend on the level of engagement from the participants, however it is expected to be around 4-6 hours per week in the case of a standard length workshop or 8-12 hours per week for a condensed workshop.

Outline

Information Technology in a Global Society: a comprehensive approach provides an overview of approaches for teaching and learning ITGS and for internal and external assessment. Teaching strategies include the integration of web 2.0 tools in the ITGS classroom and involving students in collaborative ITGS activities.
An introductory module is provided that familiarizes participants the features of the IB online workshop environment.


Module 1: Focus on the Diploma Program and ITGS

  • ITGS in a nutshell - DP programme, TOK, EE, and CAS
  • Mission Statement, IB Learner Profile and "International Mindedness"
  • Orienting students to ITGS
  • Overview of Aims and Objectives; External and Internal Assessment
  • Zoom-in on the HL/SL ITGS Guide First Examination 2012 (the Triangle and "Big Ideas")
  • Setting up access to web 2.0 tools

Module 2: Teaching Strategies, Resources and Collaborative Environments Using Web 2.0

  • OCC and the ITGS Survival Kit
  • Models for organizing the course (HL/SL)
  • Teaching strategies
  • Relationship of ITGS to TOK and CAS
  • Resources: textbooks, videos, online resources and ITGS websites
  • Online applications, web x.0 tools and collaboration using wikis

Module 3: Internal Assessment - HL/SL Project

  • Teaching strategies and guiding the Project process
  • Using command terms, guidelines and the assessment criteria
  • Submitting the Project sample in a range of formats and receiving feedback
  • ITGS subject report

Module 4: External Assessment - HL Paper 1 and SL Paper 1

  • Difference in the structure of SL Paper 1 and HL Paper 1
  • Guiding students - SL Paper 1 and HL Paper 1 questions and markschemes
  • Command terms in examination questions / markschemes for Paper 1
  • Writing Paper 1-type questions
  • Interpreting Paper 1 markschemes and markbands for marking Paper 1-type questions

Session 5: External Assessment – HL/SL Paper 2

  • Teaching strategies to analyze news items and using web 2.0 tools
  • Guiding students - structure of Paper 2, command terms and the nature of responses

  • Writing paper 2-type questions

Session 6: Case Study and External Assessment Paper 3 (HL)

  • Approach to the case study
  • Guiding students - structure of Paper 3 and markscheme
  • Writing paper 3-type questions
  • Subject report and Enquiry Upon Results (EUR)
  • 'G' in ITGS: class wiki and global wiki for collaboration on the case study

Session 7: ITGS extended essay (EE) and conclusion

  • Assessment criteria for the ITGS Extended Essay (EE)
  • Research questions appropriate for the ITGS Extended Essay
  • Research process for the EE (both secondary and primary research)
